June just feels like the best time to travel, doesn’t it? The kids are out of school, the sun is warm, days are longer and the summer clothes finally come out. Many Americans plan their vacations in June so to beat the crowds we picked a few great locations perfect for visiting without all the crowds.
Naxos Greece
Naxos is in the South Aegean Sea, and the largest of the Cyclades island group. It has been named the most underrated island in Greece. The big crowds frequently visit Mykonos and Santorini but it’s definitely worth the trip. It has a rich history dating back to the second millennium BC. Visible in just about every postcard and the boat you arrive on is the large marble gate of Potara. It is the last remaining piece if the temple dedicated to Apollo and sits on the edge of the waterfront of the island of Palatia. Loaded with rich Byzantine history, beautiful beaches, fantastic museums and much more, Naxos is a perfect June getaway.
Isla Mujeres, Mexico
One of the busiest and most popular destinations in Mexico is Cancun. This tiny island sits just off the coast but is far less crowded. June is the rainy season in Mexico so many tourists avoid the area. But don’t let that deter you because typically, like it does here in Florida, the rain will last about a half hour then it clears up again. Sure humidity can be high but the average temperature here in June is only about 82 degrees and you are on the water so the breezes keep the temperate down. If you love the outdoors then this is definitely a place for you. Enjoy snorkeling, shopping, relaxing on the beach, fishing and explore the ancient Mayan ruins. You can also visit the natural wildlife preserve, bird sanctuary and the MUSA, the largest underwater sculpture museum.
Bocas del Toro, Panama
Another great Caribbean island with tons of beautiful beaches. Sitting off the coast of Panama, Bocas del Toro islands have a lot to offer. Looking for some adventure? Try the ZIp Line at Red Frog Beach. It has been voted one of the best Zipline courses in Central America. If you are looking to relax, try taking one of the many sailing trips around the island. Some trips include stops for snorkeling as well. Other great activities include learning to surf, horseback riding, trying some locally made organic chocolate, exploring caves, shopping and much more.
Newfoundland, Canada
This eastern most province of Canada offers a wide variety of outdoor adventure. it is rarely crowded here, there are no long lines, no traffic and very few tourists compared to other parts of Canada. If you are looking to soak up some rays on a warm sandy beach this is probably not your spot. However, if breath taking views, the chance to see a wide diversity of wildlife, world-class fishing, cozy little towns and whale watching is your thing then you are in the right place. While you’re here you may spot moose, caribou, black bear, lynx, maybe even a polar bear. On one of the whale watching tours you may see Humpback whales, Killer whales (orcas), minke whales, and finbacks too. The capital city of St Johns is the oldest city in North America, that alone is worth the visit.
Palm Springs California
This desert oasis has been a getaway destination for the celebrities for decades…..just not in the summer. I spent many summers staying with grandparents as a child here in the summer and it gets really hot. It’s not uncommon for temperatures to reach 110-120 degrees (or more) in the late summer months. Fortunately there are some great ways to beat the summer heat. Take a trip on the Palm Springs areal tram which at the top reaches heights of over 8500 feet up the San Jacinto Mountains with amazing views of the Coachella Valley below. The trip takes you for a 10-minute long, 2.5-mile ride through 5 climate zones ranging from creosote shrubs at the valley floor to a frigid alpine zone at the top. Bring a jacket though, it’s not uncommon to be 100 degree weather at the base of the tram and get hit in the face with temperatures in the 40’s at the mountain top when the tram door opens. If you love golf this is your paradise. There are close to 30 golf courses in the surrounding area to choose from but make sure you get an early morning tee-time because it will be hot. Want to see where the rich and famous lived? Take a celebrity home tour to see homes owned by Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Bob Hope, Liberace, Elizabeth Taylor, Sonny and Cher, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Liberace, Nat King Cole, Dinah Shore, and dozens more. Palm Springs is loaded with world-class shopping as well. Take a drive down Palm Canyon drive and you will see many of the best shopping, art galleries and attractions the area has to offer.
