Cabo San Lucas is a tourist destination that sits on the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula. it is popular with tourists because of it’s fairly consistent year-round beautiful weather. In the summer temps can range from 70-100 degrees and the winter from 50-80 degrees. On average the area has about 350 days of sun per year making it an ideal destination for travelers any time of the year. Los Cabos, meaning “The Capes” in Spanish, consists of three areas: Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo, and the Corridor. Cabo San Lucas to the west and San Jose del Cabo to the east, with the Corridor is the 20 miles between the two cities.
The Cabo’s have a lot to offer any visitor at any time of the year. One of the biggest draws to the area is for the Marlin fishing. It is reported that more Striped Marlin have been caught off the coast than any other place in the world. Because Cabo is known as the Striped Marlin capital of the world, it also holds the distinction of holding the worlds richest fishing tournament called Bisbee’s Black and Blue Marlin Fishing Tournament. It is held every October and has a grand prize of $3 million dollars going to the winner.
Another favorite attraction for visitors is whale watching along the coast from November to March. Migrating humpbacks and Grey whales make their annual journey from the cold waters of Alaska to the warm breeding waters of Baja. January to March are the peak months to see the whale migration.
One of Cabo’s most famous landmarks is El Arco de Cabo San Lucas or Lands End as it’s known. It is a arch at the southern end of Cabo that has been photographed more than any other location in Cabo San Lucas. About once every 4-7 years when the tide, weather conditions and current conditions are just right the water level drops far enough to expose the beach surrounding the arch and allow you to walk under the arch. The normal cycle has changed in the last few years so no one really knows when to expect it anymore.
Take a swim to Lovers Beach and Divorce Beach if you dare! Lovers Beach is a small, intimate beach just west of the arch on the Sea of Cortez (Gulf of California) side and a popular spot to lay out and get some sun for both locals and tourists alike. The waters at the beach are very calm and serine and very popular with the locals and tourists alike. Just on the other side of the peninsula is a larger dangerous strip of beach called Divorce Beach. The beach is on the Pacific Ocean side with rough and unpredictable waters and strong rip currents with occasional rogue waves. There are signs posted urging visitors to stay out of the water. Rough and unpredictable, like a bad relationship…visitors beware!
Visit the famous cantina owned by Van Halen lead singer, Sammy Hagar. Cabo Wabo Cantina is world renowned for it’s long list of famous musicians that have played here as well as it’s outstanding food and party atmosphere. It ha been featured on MTV, VH1, E Channel, Travel Channel and many others. Bring your appetite, try Sammy’s own Cabo Wabo brand of Tequila and make sure you have a designated driver, it could be a long night especially if Sammy is there!
If you are looking for something more quiet, take a sunset tour with one of the many tour companies. The sunset tour lasts about 2 1/2 hours and will take you on a tour around Lands End Lovers and Divorce Beaches. Prices start around $100 per person depending on the tour company but well worth it if you are looking for that luxury experience.
The aquatic experiences are plentiful but if you are looking to get away from the water and crowds at the beach then try a desert camel ride. If you are looking for a down-to-earth experience with amazing views of the Pacific Ocean on one side and the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains on the other side. Many of the local courses were designed by famous golfers Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman, Fred Couples and Tiger Woods. 4 of the 15 courses found here are in the top 100 courses in the world. Many of these courses are nestled right on the banks of the Pacific Ocean or Sea of Cortez with rugged terrain, surrounded by desert oasis or hugging the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains.
Get ready to max out your credit cards in Cabo’s shopping district. Cabo’s vast shopping options include local street vendors and flea markets selling original works of blown glass, jewelry, embroidered clothing, hand-painted talavera tiles, hammocks and beaded-and-yarn works by the Huichol tribe. You can also find plenty of deals at the Las Tiendas de Palmilla strip mall with plenty of high-end boutiques. There are many store within walking distance where you can find art work from local artists, cosmetics and skin care products, cigar shops, souvenirs and specialty shops, leather goods and of course plenty of Tequila shops.
Another awesome thing to do is to go swimming with Whale Sharks. Sounds dangerous but these gentile giants reaching lengths of over 30 feet are strictly herbivores so unless your bikini is made of sea grass you’re pretty safe. The peak months to swim with the sharks are September and April. It is sure to be an experience you won’t forget.
